This might be one of my favourite party decor items I've ever made! I had so much fun with this DIY Treasure Map Table Runner . I found the idea on Liquesantics. I had some brown craft paper already but if you don't already own some you can easily find it at party, craft or office supply stores.
I cut a piece the length of my table. I then ripped off all four sides so it would look wavy, worn and resemble a treasure map. With a pencil and erasure I drew a dashed line "path" along the whole length of the paper. At certain turns and corners I drew some fun drawings of caves, sea creatures, volcanos, a deserted island, a pirate ship, etc. At the beginning I drew a rolled up treasure map and at the other end I drew an X and a treasure chest for X Marks the Spot. This was where the birthday boy was going to sit and where I'd put the super fun DIY X Marks the Spot Birthday Cake I made for him so it seemed appropriate to have the treasure map end there.
Once I was happy with all my drawings I got a black medium thickness sharpie and I copied over all my drawings. I tried to be a bit loose with it so it wasn't perfect. I love how it turned out. I've even kept this table runner despite the fact that I have no use for it whatsoever. It turned out too good to just recycle.
