How to Make a Piñata Cake

For my daughters 4th birthday a few years ago I decided to surprise her with a Piñata Cake. It was a huge success!

First you need to make two batches of cake splitting each into two round cake pans. In the end you should have four round cakes (you’ll only need three so wrap the fourth is some plastic wrap and freeze for a later date).

Cut the top off of one of the cakes making the top flatter. This will be the bottom layer of the Piñata Cake.

Add some icing around the edge of the top of the cake.. Don’t put any icing in the middle of the cake. Here’s my Buttercream Icing recipe. How to Make a Piñata Cake
Very carefully cut the centre out of the second cake and then add it on top of the first cake. This will create a nice little pocket.

Fill the pocket you’ve made with candy. You can use any kind you’d like.

Next add icing to the edge of the second cake being careful not to get any icing on the candy.

Add the third round cake on top of the second one completing the cake. Now the candy is secretly hidden inside!

Decorate and display cake as normal as if this was your normal run of the mill cake. No trickery here!

Finally sing happy birthday, cut that bad boy open and get the camera ready to catch the surprise!

My kids loved the Piñata Cake! All the candy came falling out and it was an added bonus to be able to pick at it and dig their own candy out to eat.

I highly recommend making one of these. It would be perfect for Easter too! Like a hidden Easter basket!

It’s actually one of the simplest cakes I’ve ever made just make sure that if you use unwrapped candy that you don’t make the cake too far in advance otherwise your candy is going to get kinda soggy and the colours will bleed into the cake. Not so pretty!

Happy Baking!
